Chris Jenkins

BNat (Hons), BSc, MNHAA
Naturopath, Herbalist, Nutritionist

After a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Maths and Physics, and then working as a system administrator and IT techie for many years, Chris decided it was time for a change and after chatting to other practitioners and friends he elected to study for a degree in Naturopathy. Thankfully this involved moving to the Northern NSW coast with its stunning beaches, rainforests and fantastic local markets. Right from the start he wanted to do more than just the standard degree, so he continued on to do an honours project comparing the various methods of preparing herbal medicines (tea infusions, decoctions, macerations, and percolations).

Chris then spent a couple of years working for the Centre for Phytochemistry and Pharmacology at Southern Cross University analysing and helping with plant compound identification and quantification in herbal medicines and supplements. This gave him an idea of the large variations in quality of different products on the market and also an appreciation for quality herbal extracts. He then moved to Tasmania to join Goulds Natural Medicine as an intern for six months; Goulds being one of the few naturopathic clinics in Australia that manufacture their own medicines. At the end of the internship, he was offered ongoing employment and jumped at the chance of joining the team.

Chris spends half his working time in Goulds Apothecary giving over the counter health advice on a wide variety of topics from cold and flus through to skin conditions and anxiety, and the rest of the time advising patients in a one-on-one basis in the Clinic. He has a keen interest in how naturopathy can assist in sports performance (training, preparation, fueling and recovery) and health concerns such as pain, inflammation and exhaustion. He also co-authored an e-book on treatments for acne, and is interested in the treatment of conditions relating to poor blood sugar control such as Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome.

Most of his spare time is spent either playing with his daughters, riding or working on one of his several bikes, or gardening.
