Goulds Biodynamic Farm

From farm to medicine cup

Our grassroots connection to herbal medicines

By growing and manufacturing many herbal medicines at our farm, following organic and biodynamic practices, we maintain a vital grassroots connection to our medicines and can carefully ensure their sustainability and quality for the benefit of our patients.

Our medicinal herbs are carefully nurtured and harvested for optimal purity, vitality and efficacy, ensuring the best for your health.

Our biodynamic farm grows cool climate herbs for our dispensary

Goulds farm is a certified biodynamic farm, following organic and biodynamic practices. The herb farm has been operating since 1995, set up and managed for many years by Greg Whitten, who has over 45 years of experience in producing premium quality herbs for medicinal use. It now operates with the collaborative oversight of our dedicated Farm Team.

The biodynamic approach views the farm as an organism and works to balance the forces influencing fertility and growth.

Greg Whitten

Greg Whitten has been growing herbal medicine for four decades and is highly regarded for his dedication to producing premium quality herbal medicines by taking care at every step.

Greg has a wonderful innovative capacity and has adapted and invented many tools and processes to this end from the blueberry rake that was adapted to create a chamomile comb, to the scythe with catcher for harvesting leafy crops, to the shape of the percolating columns and clever tools he created for emptying them. Some of these skills and resources were handed down from his grandfather and father, others have their origin in the back to the land era.

Greg is the author of the much loved book Herbal Harvest, a self taught botanist and holder of many surprising interests and hobbies.

Our farm follows a small scale paradigm

The production scale at our farm is relatively small -  most of the work we do is with hand tools, keeping us grounded and connected to the earth and enabling us to produce a premium quality product. We make use of well-designed, traditional tools like reaping hooks and scythes to harvest the leaf herbs, combs for harvesting chamomile, forks for digging roots, and for weeding. We make our own compost and apply biodynamic preparations.

Premium quality herbs from farm to medicine cup

We are proud to produce outstanding premium quality herbs, nurtured by Tasmania's unique climate.

From farm to medicine cup

The cool, clean location stimulates many herb species to produce high levels of active constituents, alongside the care we take in producing them.

Herbs are grown using biodynamic practices to support healthy soil for optimal growth

Compost made following these principles supports the nutritional needs of the plants

Herbs are harvested at the optimal time when their vitality is strongest

The active parts of the plants are carefully collected using a range of adapted tools and techniques

Harvested herbs are carefully dried away from direct sunlight at optimal temperatures to preserve medicinal qualities, using mainly passive solar energy.

Once dried, the herbs may be used for teas or to make tinctures. Many of our herbs are extracted using the percolation process with organic ethanol to make a liquid herbal tincture. This method produces a strong extract.

Some of our herbal tinctures include both fresh and dried plant extracts. We add the element of a fresh plant extract when there are important components in the fresh plant that are lost during drying.

Most of our herbs are also used as teas for their therapeutic benefits and for enjoyable beverages. Our range of premium quality teas and blends attract a strong following.

And this is the journey of these special plants at Goulds as they make their way into your medicine cup as a tincture or a herbal tea.
